Editing… the unsung hero
Most people don’t even think about how media is made, and it is completely by design! When the media you watch is appealing and engaging, you instantly forget that you’re watching something someone made, and instead now focus on the story or message. And although that seems incredibly easy to do, it’s actually extremely difficult!
It takes a lot of people, a lot of time, and a lot of different skills to put that media together for even a 3 second moment in a TV, Movie, Corporate, or Youtube Video. In fact, most people think that someone just records a couple of seconds with a really expensive camera, which they sometimes are, and boom they’re done! However, almost no one thinks about the editing process and the editor who put all the pieces together and created that engaging story.
So what exactly do I mean by pieces? Well, editing today requires a single person or team to review and pick the absolute best shots from the cameras, cut/manipulate/sort/style a bunch of video into a cohesive story, correct any video imperfections including colors or effects, and perfectly edit all the audio so it doesn’t destroy your ears, or sound like everyone is talking in a fish tank! Oh, and this doesn’t even take into account on the spot live editing for TV, Streams, or Podcasts?
I could go on endlessly about how a good editor is worth their weight in gold, but if you’ve ever tried to make your own media, or work with a media company that had their own “unique” idea of editing, you will fully back my statement. editing may not ever get the respect, admiration, or understanding of why it’s so important (and sometimes costly), but as I said at the beginning.. it’s unfortunately completely by design!
