Why is some media more costly than others?
There can be many answers to this, but the biggest factors that directly affect cost are time, hardware and experience/talent needed to create the media. Professional video equipment is very expensive, it can take 3+ hours of recording just to capture a 1 minute of finished video, and this is only half of the project. You still need a skilled and talented editor to put all the pieces of the finished video together.
Does all media take a long time to make?
This is one of the most common misconceptions with media, which can be made quickly! For instance, news channels can record, edit, and finish a nightly news show in a single day. On the other hand, a major blockbuster movie can have 50 to 100 people working on a single 60 second action scene in a 2 hour movie for months full-time. It really comes down to the expectation of the finished product and the “polish” that a director, editor, colorist, and graphical artist have to do to create that final product. There are tricks and ways to get around some of this to help cut costs, but it still honestly just comes down to the size, scope, and staffing of the project.
